A variation on game play

When you consider game play in HPE classrooms you aim to incorporate fun activities that will keep the students engaged and create a fun, physical atmosphere. It is evident that most teachers have a routine and system that works for them in their classroom, which can be both good and bad because shouldn’t they be aiming to step outside of their comfort zones and try new activities and ways of learning if they really want to maximize student engagement?

An example of this is incorporating fun warm up activities which students would not expect to enjoy such as games they played in primary school. Some educators are to afraid to experiment with these games when in most cases they do grab attention and begin the lesson with a bit of fun… Ship Shore for example is an awesome ice breaker which students would instantly refuse to play or shy away from because of the embarrassment of participating in a childish game; little do they know, many of these activities have hidden skills and create not only physical, but also mental and social engagement.

  1. So true about using games like Ship to shore, I learnt on one of my placements to change the game to suit what the students are learning. I have linked you to my blog regarding this. Thanks for the inspiration!
